Pooran Poli

Puran poli is a flat bread stuffed with a sweet lentil filling made from skinned spilt bengal gram/chana dal and jaggery. puran poli is a popular maharashtrian recipe made during ganesh chaturthi or diwali or any other festive occasion.

Step-1. First, wash and soak ¼ cup of Chana dal for 4 to 5 hrs.

Step-2. Boil it with enough water. To check dal is cooked or not, take dal and press it. If it is broken smoothly, it is cooked.

Step-3. Now drain the excess water and keep cooked dal aside in a bowl.

Step-4. Take one frying pan, add the ¼ cup jaggery and 1/8 cup of water. Boil this mixture till jaggery melts completely.

Step-5. Add cooked Chana dal, ½ tsp cardamom powder, ¼ tsp ginger powder and mix all the ingredients very well. Stir till the mixture leaves the pan.

Step-6. At this stage, add 2 tsp ghee, remove from the flame and keep stuffing aside.

Step-7. Take one large bowl, add ½ cup of wheat flour, salt as per your taste, 1 tsp oil and mix well.

Step-8. Add water little by little and knead a smooth dough. Pour little oil on dough and mix well.

Step-9. Now divide the dough into small balls.

Step-10. Take one ball and make thin sheet of round shape with the help of rolling pin.

Step-11. Put stuffing in the middle of the circle and cover remaining part of the sheet.

Step-12. Roll these stuffed balls in dry wheat flour, then make round sheets of 6” with the help of rolling pin, and keep them aside.

Step-13. Do the same for the remaining balls.

Step-14. Heat tava and put rolled pooran poli on it. Cook pooran poli by applying oil till it becomes brown from both the sides.

Step-15. Pooran Poli is ready to serve.
